REPORT OF FAKIR MOHAN FOUNDATION (FMF)’S ACTIVITIES IN THE LAST 5 YEARS

The foundation carries out its work under three categories or wings of FMF, viz Language & Culture, Socio-Economic Development and Education for Empowerment. The issue of language is uppermost on the FMF agenda.We have been conducting workshops in different prestigious institutions to this effect. The core concept for these are an interface of the socio-economic issues with language and literature. The interaction and participation of the student community features prominently in our workshop programme. The account of which can be found in the report given below. Most of our programs are to ‘YOUTH CENTRIC’ :

  • Chairperson Fakir Mohan Foundation, Monica Das was felicitated on the occasion of Fakir Mohan Senapati's 175th year of birthday celebration on 14th jan 2018 on Makar Sankranti at Jaydev Bhawan by Dr Sk Das from Das Foundation USA, Minister higher education Hon Ananta Das and minister finance Hon Shashi Bhusan Behera.
  • A souvenir of very highy quality was released on the occasion. Monica Das (Chairperson FMF) has contributed an article for this and is also on the editorial board of the magazine. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik was present on the occasion in the evening and had announced number of steps concerning the icon Fakir Mohan Senapati’s legacy to be popularized amongst youth in general. He announced that the steps should be put into practice with immediate effect along with a functioning website. This was indeed heartening news.

  • On the occasion of Odisha Art and lit Fest held on 2nd Feb, 2018. participating in the panel discussion were leading litterateurs of the land like Prof Himanshu Mahapatra, prof. Debendra Das, Prof. and vice and chancellor central univ, Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty (Moderator) , Prof. Rabindra Das from Visva Bharti University and Monica Das of FMF. This panel discussion was sponsored by a philanthropist and it was organized by Fakir Mohan Foundation, New Delhi. The panel discussion was titled 'Different facets of Fakir Mohan Senapati'. It was a three day festival with the participation of many foreign delegates of different nationalities.

  • Dr. Monica Das was invited to give the key-note address at Ravenshaw University in November, 2017 at a workshop that was held there. She was felicitated for taking forward the legacy of Fakir Mohan Senapati. She attended the workshop titled “Collision of Modernities in British Odisha: Early Social Realism in Fakir Mohan Senapati's Fictional Narratives”. Subsequently this book has been published by Amazon and it contains excerpts of Monica Das’s Memoirs relating to Fakir Mohan Senapati and the family.

  • Recently (Jan, 2018) a steering committee has been formed in Bhubaneswar for carrying out activities of the foundation on a regular basis. In this are associated Professors from five different universities in Odisha, activists, journalists and film makers. A state-wide essay competition, meant for students at all levels of education, based on Fakir Mohan Senapati’s life and works is to be conducted soon. There are many other programs on the agenda. This has had news coverage.

  • Fakir Mohan Foundation, New Delhi has launched a workshop program intended for the youth pan Odisha/ India titled ‘Back to Basics’ – a program for holistic development of the youth equipping them through soft skills for nation building. Workshop module design is in place - the unique element in the module is the interface of socio-economic concerns with language and literature. For this FMF has designed a module that has elements of humanism which are interfaced with literature and language of the great writers/thinkers of India. Humanism, it goes without saying, encompasses environmental consciousness, gender sensitization with special emphasis on gender equality, love for one’s heritage and realization about one’s roots/identity. We wish to carry out our agenda pan India. As a flagship movement we have already carried it out successfully in Odisha.

  • In the year 2015, a film screening on Fakir Mohan Senapati along with a discussion session titled ‘Odiya Identity and Fakir Mohan Senapati’ was held at India International Centre, New Delhi under the auspices of Odisha Forum New Delhi. Dr. J.P. Das, the eminent litterateur chaired the session and on the panel of speakers was Summary Satpathi, Professor Delhi University (Dept. of English) and Dr. Monica Das, Delhi University and Chairperson Fakir Mohan Foundation, New Delhi. Dr. Das spoke specifically on the making of the film Anwesan (Directed by her, and produced by Doordarshan Archives). This had won the National tele-film award for being the best docu-drama of the year.

  • A One Day Workshop on 'Gender Studies' n 'Green Studies' was organized by FM Foundation, New Delhi in collaboration with U N Autonomous College, Adashpur, Cuttack on 5th April 2018. Students and teachers participated in large numbers. There were experts from different universities who conducted the workshop, first of its kind, in a very adept manner. Sj Trilochan Kanungo, a veteran, nationalist and founder of this institution was full of energy and encouraged the students immensely. He bestowed a lot of credit to FM Foundation and particularly to Dr. Monica Das for the stewardship of this novel venture. Dr. Sita Kanta Das was felicitated on the occasion and Dr. Monica Das rendered the inaugural speech and presented the concept note of the workshop. Dr. Sudhakar Panda, vice chancellor Birla Global University, was the chief guest of the day.

  • On 3rd Feb 2018, Odisha chapter of Fakir Mohan Foundation, New Delhi came into operation and the members are established professors from five different universities. Along with that were theatre persons and other enthusiasts. We hope to take off in a big way and carry out the agenda of the foundation and promote the legacy of Senapati amongst the youth. We seek the good wishes of friends and well-wishers of FMF.

  • A proposal from Fakir Mohan Foundation making an Omnibus in English of Fakir Mohan’s works has been approved by Sahitya Akademi recently.

  • A musical DVD titled ‘Mohana Moorchhana’ has been brought out on Fakir Mohan Senapati’s poems recently. It is a musical/vocal rendition of Fakir Mohan Senapati’s poems. The vocalists taking part in this are Pranab Patnaik, Adyasha Das, Monica Das, Sangita Gosain and Namrata Mohanty. It is available on youtube (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nINsMhZo7M).

  • 15 March, 2018, Dr. Monica Das was at JNU, School for International Studies (SIS) as chief guest, on the occasion of a commemorative event for Adikabi Sarala Das chair. The chief speaker was Prof. Kailash Patnaik, HOD Odiya LIT, Visva Bharati, Shantiniketan and an expert on FM Senapati studies. The key note speaker was Prof. Udayanath Sahoo, Adikabi Sarala Das chair of Odia Studies, CIL, JNU. Dean of SIS Prof Ajay Patnaik also spoke on the occasion. Dr. Udayanath Sahoo and Dr. Kailash Patnaik presented their in depth studies and research outcomes on Fakir Mohan Senapati. Dr. Monica Das mostly spoke about the activities concerning Fakir Mohan Foundation and related matters.

  • On 8th April, 2018, Dr. Monica Das was felicitated in the conference Hall of National Library Kolkata. The event was organised by Jagannath Sahitya Parishad in collaboration with Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. This was followed by a National Seminar on Fakir Mohan Senapati where eminent litterateurs of India presented their research papers. I delivered a speech after receiving the honor and spoke at length both about Fakir Mohan Foundation, New Delhi and the language movement through a novel workshop program that we have launched recently. This would soon be on a pan Odisha/India scale.


  • Recently, a pan Odisha/India essay competition at three levels has been launched. The news item (Sambad) below has all the details.

  • As managing trustee and on behalf of Fakir Mohan Foundation (FMF), New Delhi, Dr. Monica Das received an award recently at a function held at the IDCOL auditorium, BBSR on 15 June 2018. This was on the occasion of Fakir Mohan Senapati's hundred years of death anniversary. The award given to FMF was for commendable performance in the field of sensitising the youth regarding the importance of mother tongues and other socio-economic concerns of the present day world through workshops and various other programmes. On this occasion, Fakir Mohan International award for literature was awarded to two eminent litterateurs Dr. Debendra Das and Dr. Aurobindo Giri for outstanding contribution to Fakir Mohan studies.

  • Dr Monica Das has spoken about the mission concerning Fakir Mohan Foundation on TV on several occasions.


  • In 2016, Department of Culture, Govt. of Odisha in a special function held in Jaydev Bhawan, Bhubaneswar under the auspices Biju Centen…. Celebrations screened the film ‘Anvesan’ directed by Dr. Monica Das. In the same function the musical DVD on Fakir Mohan’s poems was presented. This was produced by Dr. Monica Das and vocalist are Pranab Patnaik, Adyasha Das, Monica Das and Sangeeta Gosain.

  • Recently (8th October, 2018) our Fakir Mohan Foundation, New Delhi held a workshop for the youth in collaboration with Utkal University. The dignitaries present were Prashanta Nanda, M.P. Rajya Sabha and eminent cine personality, shri Debi Prasanna Patnaik, the main architect behind Odiya attaining the classical status, Das Behnur, eminent orator and writer, vice chancellor, Utkal University, Dr Somendra Patnaik, HOD Dr. Bishnu Priya Ota and Dr. Rabindra Kumar Das prof. Vishwa Bharti University. It was very well received by all and had wide media coverage including T.V. The idea is to involve the youth and spread the word about the importance of interfacing menacing socio-economic issues with the study of literature. This is intended to be held on a regular basis pan Odisha. The module for this has been structured by Fakir Mohan Foundation, New Delhi. The poster is self explanatory.



  • A pan Indian essay competition was conducted six months back and the results were declared and prizes distributed on this occasion.
  • Felicitated by Padmashree DeviPrassanna Pattnaik as my descriptive essay on " The Humanistic Values in Fakir Mohan's Writings" is highly appreciated by Fakir Mohan Foundation, Newdelhi.   • National workshop on "Obligation towards Society-its connotations in the light of Fakirmohan Senapati's Writings" in the P.G. Council Auditorium of Utkal University organized by Fakirmohan Foundation, New Delhi in collaboration with the Department of Odia, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar on 1.10.2018 on the auspicious presence honourable VC of Utkal Prof. Soumendra Mohan Pattanayak, Padmashri D P Pattanayak, Film Litterateur Prashanta Nanda, Litterateur Das Benhur, Managing Trustee of F M Foundation Monica Das, HoD Bishnupriya Ota n me.

2019

  • At the felicitation function of the newly elected MP's that was held in CSOI Chanakyapuri. I was also felicitated on the occasion as the managing trustee of Fakir Mohan Foundation.


  • On 13th June 2019, the chief minister of Odisha was felicitated by the public in large numbers in Odisha Bhavan, New Delhi. On the same occasion Dr. Monica Das was given an opportunity to present her book that was recently released in New Delhi. The book was titled ‘Memoirs and More …’ which had apart from other things references to Biju Patnaik, the eminent chief minister of Odisha of the yesteryears.

  • Celebrated Utkal Divas 1st April 2019 with the Odia Samaj of IIT Roorkee as the guest of honor.


  • An Omnibus on Fakir Mohan Senapati was prepared for Sahitya Akademi and was submitted as an assignment by Dr. Monica Das.

  • Dr. Monica Das’ book 'Memoirs and More' was released on 6th April at the Council for Social Development (CSD), India International Centre, New Delhi, Annexe, 53, Lodhi Estate. The book is woven around the relics and legacy of the legendary Vyasa Kavi Fakir Mohan Senapati. The book was released by Justice Anang Patnaik, Lalit Mansingh (former ambassador to USA), Manoranjan Mohanty (Prof. Delhi University), Gokul Patnaik (President Odisha Forum), Prof. Bulbul Dhar (Jamia Milia University).


  • A function was organized on 25th January in Bhubaneswar where Jnanpith awardee smt Pratibha Ray was the chief guest for the occasion and Dr. Monica Das was the guest of honour. Principal BJB college and Prof. Khirod Behera gave an eloquent introduction and meticulously conducted the whole function which was followed by some student interaction.

    International Poetry Recitation Competition

    Held on 7/8/2020
    First Phase for students from 1st Class to 7th Class.
    Second Phase of the Competition was from 8th Class to 12th Class.
    Third Stage of the Competition was held on 8/8/2020
    Students from USA and Canada had participated. For the session the collaboration was between Fakir Mohan Foundation and Odisha Society of Americas. There were seven Judges Altogether and Prizes were distributed. The whole session was recorded and have been uploaded on YouTube.

  • 'Mohana Moorchhana' is a musical tribute to a great iconic figure Vyasa Kavi Fakir Mohan Senapati by Fakir Mohan Foundation, New Delhi. These two songs have been rendered by Vyasa Kavi's great grand-daughter Dr. Monica Das.

  • Fakir Mohan's short story 'Patent Medicine' read by Dr Hiranmayee Mishra: It is Fakir Mohan's short story ' Patent Medicine'. It is the first in the series of short story readings that is going to take place on a regular basis under the Fakir Mohan Foundation banner. This one has been read out by Dr. Hiranmayee Mishra. She is an established writer and is also an associate prof in a college in Odisha.
